Mooning

meme
slang

Crypto-market slang for a rapid price rise—or the hope of one—with no fixed threshold.

Also known as
moon
1
usage

"Mooning" describes a price rising very quickly, while "to the moon" expresses a hope or prediction that it will. Neither phrase has a standard percentage, time window, or measurement method, so its meaning depends on context.

2
interpretation

Treat the phrase as sentiment rather than analysis. A useful claim specifies the asset, quote currency, venue or price index, percentage change, and time window. Thin liquidity or leverage can make a dramatic percentage move easier without showing broad demand.

3
risk

Fast price increases can reverse quickly. News, low liquidity, forced liquidations, coordinated promotion, or manipulation can all produce a move that looks similar on a chart, so "mooning" is not by itself a reason to trade.
